Hi, a question but first a little background. I've been building model ships and boats for 40+ years but have only just found this website. I've built Bluenose (Billing Boats), Clara May (Artesania Latina), Sail Clipper Anna (Billing Boats), a 1/24 scratch built RC Fairmile D, a 1/20 scratch built RC Clara May and many RC yachts.

My question is in regard to the Clara May sail plan. I built this kit back in 2006 and decided at the time to leave the sails off. I can't recall why. Now, my wife has asked that I put the sails on. I still have the original sail cloth that came with the kit and I also have the instruction book. What I don't have are the measurements of the sails or the sail plan that came with the kit.

What pointed me to this site was a post I saw from "Terence" dated July 2020 relating to his model of Clara May.

So, would anyone have a copy of the sail plan or the measurements or be able to point me to somewhere that I might be able to get them. Any help would be appreciated.

As a side note, I mentioned above the 1/20 Clara May I built. I thought at the time of building the kit that this model would look great scaled up and radio controlled. To cut a long story short, I scaled it from 1/50 to 1/20 and scratch built it over about 12 months with many headaches along the way. We eventually went sailing and what a surprise. With 12Kg ballast, a false keel (another 1.5Kg) and an extended rudder (it would hardly turn with the scale size), it performed way beyond expectations. Even in a moderate breeze, all the sails set nicely and it is reasonably maneuverable. Let me know if you want more information. A couple of pics attached.

First and foremost WELCOME to SoS!!!
Have you done an internet search for the plans? I just did a quick internet search for Clara May sail plan and found the following drawing by David McGregor. Is this what you are looking for? I read that he died but his family was bequeathed the original drawings so maybe you can still get a set. Good luck

It is my understanding that the people who manage the Brunel Steamship Great Western in Bristol, UK own and sell copies of David McGregor’s drawings.

Allen, thanks for the drawing. From my understanding, the David McGregor model was 1/48 whereas the kit was 1/50. Not much of a difference to really matter. I had done the search for the sail plan but didn't see the one you came up with. Anyway, what I was really after was the plan of all the sails. The best I came up with is in the pic. The plan I need is there but doesn't show everything :(

Is there a reason you cannot use the plans that you posted for making each sail? I would not include the edge they show, but go with the sail lines themselves. You can treat the edges with Dritz Fray Check to make sure it does not fray and they will look much better.

Maybe make sails from silk span? They are far more realistic and easier than cloth. Even at 1:48 or 1:50 there is no cloth that is to scale and it it is nigh impossible to make stitches to scale with a sewing machine or by hand. Please let us know how it works out. :)

Thanks Allan, I totally agree with your suggestion. I hadn't actually put my mind to what to use and now you've saved me the hassle. :)

I can't use the plans I posted. That pic only shows a portion of the sail plan. As you can see, the lower portion of all the bigger sails is missing. But it won't be a problem really. I can measure the dimensions from the actual model and verify against the sails on my 1/20 model with some simple maths. I do recall scaling up the original drawings for my bigger version but that was 20 years ago.

I'm waiting on delivery of my next model, the OcCre Endurance. I'll use the same materials for the sails on that. It's been quite some time since I built a model ship. I've spent many years busy with RC sailing and RC flying.
