K63 HMS Picotee 1941 1/48 scale early short forecastle Flower Class Corvette

Not really a post about HMS Picotee. Still frustrated as to the correct order of work below the forecastle and peed off with people letting me down I decided to get my head showered and set a different challenge; Build a battleship in a weekend!

So starting Fri. @ 1800 hrs to Mon @ 1800 I challenged myself to build and paint as much of Trumpeter's 1/350 scale SMS Viribus Unitis. I have been wanting to build this ship since seeing photographs of her in an article by Uwek about the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum. Uwek also has a great piece about her sinking. So when the kit came up on eBay at the right price I had to have it. I recon I have spent about twenty seven hours over the three days working on her. Plastic kits are a bit like painting by numbers so forgive me for not doing a build log.

Feel better now so back to Picotee.
Cheers JJ..

I think I also just spent 27 hours working on channels for my Kingfisher. I decided last night that their final resting place will be in the trash bin...:(.

You used your 27 hours much better than I did....
It's not the same though. And I bet most of us would be happy with what you think is rubbish.

All the best JJ..

Good morning Jack. If I had to build a plastic ship every time I need my "head showered" there would be no more in stock...;).A very cool weekend build my friend. Cheers Grant

Good news the 'head shower' worked, after all those minute pesky little bits I can't wait to get back to working with something I can see. Some of the rigging on that wee boat was 0.1mm dia.. When I dropped a bit I never seen it again!

True story, I was going to ask Paul (@dockattner ) to send them to me so I could use them on my ship ROTF
I still have them on my worktable seeing if they can change my mind about their eternal fate. But since shipping things to you in SA is a six month process you would be better off making your own out of random parts from Justin's bike ROTF.

...you can always send the parts using expedited shipping, though. ;)ROTF

Well after my saunterer through the dark side I have returned, head showered, fresh and raring to go. Tasks that seemed impossible now come with ease. I have completed laying the section of wooden deck and stained it to something closer to the colour of the steel deck. Not to have darkened it would have left the wood looking just too new.
As this process was going on I made a companion way and sky lights to fit under the forecastle just in front of a supply cupboard, the bulkheads of this cupboard double as supports for the four inch gun on the forecastle deck and fill most of the free space. I also made a sky light to sit tight to the front of the captains cabin. This skylight lets light into the officers wardroom. Still to be completed in this area is the bracket that supports the mast at the forecastle deck level along with the mast step attached to the wooden deck.
Still working on the pesky degaussing cable, but now at least I think it will fit.

Hi folks.
A goodly amount of forward progress this last few days, particularly the bulwark support frames. There are forty of these and every one, because of the sheer and curve of the deck are slightly different and had to be made separately. Looking at photographs of 'flowers' it is apparent that they are not always placed equally apart, this is good for me as I had to fit them between the wash ports,(maybe the same reason on the real thing). Behind the supports sits the degaussing cable trunking, a tight squeeze but fitted nicely in the end. Some very early 'flowers' had the cable held in rectangular trunking on the outside of the hull but my only pic of HMS Picotee does not show this. The pics. that I have of HMS Heliotrope show the cable ducted along the deck close to the bulwark. This seems to reduce the efficiency of the wash ports as it covers half their height. I cannot imagine that in any of the flowers this ducting runs straight as a die along the one hundred and fifty odd feet of bulwark, which is good as mine has more ups and downs than a new brides pyjamas!
Next I fitted the forecastle deck and added some 'plating', most of this will be covered when I add the gun's bandstand and the wooden decking. At first I thought this wooden decking was a rare piece of decorative work, but that would not be in keeping with the austere building policy of the flower class. Then it dawned on me that the two main areas that are covered in wood are above the crews quarters, so perhaps it is there as a sort of insulation, reducing sound and keeping in the heat, just a guess.
This is the last good chance to turn the hull upside down before adding too much easy knocked off bit, so I will touch up the black a/f an give the hull another /last coat of protective satin clear. I will give this four or five days to dry. In the meantime I have lots to keep me going.

I really like those details like that pipe. That is what people think you will not notice, but is essential to create “depth” in the model.

Another good example for me to follow.

Sometimes with a quote I have a ‘Deja-vu’. But this time it’s a ‘Prospect’. They have to come also om my model. On your model they are looking very straight, Jack. Even with the tube through them all.
Regards, Peter

Thanks Peter, I was happy to get them as good as they are. The base plate had to be 8mm from the side and that made it difficult to get the pipe running level but in the end I was pleased enough. Getting the top rail nice and straight is the next challenge. I see you use a lot of Evergreen styrene and that was what I used for the angle pieces, expensive stuff but the only manufacture I could find that makes their profiles of a consistent thickness and a true right angle.

Cheers Jack.

Feels like I have been ages working on these bulwarks and there is still steam and water pipes to add on the outside, but cannot add them until I make the boiler room housing. More chicken and eggs.

Cheers JJ..
