La Pinta - Artesania Latina 1:65

Cartagena, Colombia.
Carlos,
One of our favorite ports of call. Isla del Encanto Resort at Baru Island has been a highlight several times and there is so much interesting history in Cartagena itself. You are in a good place for the holiday!!

Now that I’ve finally shaken off a hard cold and bronchitis, I can begin turning a corner of one of the guest rooms into my shipyard in Cartagena.

After a few weeks away dealing with termites at home and doing some windsurfing, I’m finally back to La Pinta and working on the second planking.tempImagemJ65xT.jpgtempImageAzx2VB.pngtempImagehhl8d9.png

Apparently, whoever assembled my kit decided the 2x4 mm walnut strip was optional. Bold choice.

Thankfully, a couple of 1mm strips from an old kit came in handy. After a brief stare-down with the box, we carried on.

Slowly moving forward with all the tiny details around the ship’s decks ⚓️ Lots of small pieces, lots of patience.

Getting close to the fun part though — installing the masts and setting up the rigging, which is probably what I enjoy the most when building a ship. Little by little it’s all coming together.

Shipyard update: All 3 masts are up and standing tall and waiting to get set to right angle to start rigging !!

Also realizing that a rope machine would make the rigging look much better and add some new skills to my toolbox. It’s officially on the wishlist… next project, I’m definitely getting one!

The ratlines have definitely tested my patience—first time working on them! Thankfully, I was able to look at some previous SOS builds and pick up a lot of great tips along the way, otherwise I might still be tying knots! Still working in Progress !!
