Good afternoon everyone. While preparing to work on my ships Quarter Deck it occurred to me my critical path needed to be adjusted or I would lose easy access to staining the bulwark elements that lie under the open area under the quarter deck. This includes setting the primary interior longitudinal beam that defines the bottom of the opening of all the gunports. As I mentioned earlier, I built out the frame and wheels of one canon carriage with a canon just resting on it to check clearances for the canon openings in the hull. Using the prescribed height of the beam I dry fitted it and sure enough something was very wrong. I had the correct distance but used the wrong reference subfloor beam to measure off of. Whew, I could have easily skipped the canon clearance checking, glued the ledge beams in then later been in tears tearing it all out. Now all is well and here are some pics plus the glue down of the ledge beam.
I've glued in the rear cabin bulkhead along with the two upper deck deck beam supports. I spent 2 days faring out the interior ribs of the cabin area in preparation for the interior hull planks. The rib wood is so ugly to me I can't hardly wait to cover it up.

Sometimes you want to take steps and see progress …..
After nearly 1.5 years of building, you have now invested 2 days in this adjustment. In terms of time, that is in perspective; in terms of the result, very satisfying. And that is what matters, Daniel. My respect!

Thanks Grant, I must admit since having the gun deck support beams and planking now finished I am enjoying this build much more. I have this feeling the external hull planking is going to be my next major challenge.
Daniel --- As always - a pleasure to follow your log(s) PS your Vasa was not too "shabby" either -- I don't remember if you mentioned if those canon barrels were from the kit or after market -- I Really like them !!! and if they are resin you so captured the look of an iron or bronze casting. Well done

Thanks John, the canons are kit furnished cast metal. It was a very pleasant surprise as most of their advertised canons are turned brass with no decorative markings. The patina is as received.

Hey @woodbutcher, a while back on post #684 you showed a profile pointing out the drain scuppers and they are triangular in shape. I just found this plate #50 with precut triangular scuppers for use with the hull planking. So, your kit should have it as well.

Hi Daniel,
I have parts 50 in my collection of kit wood. In my translated parts list (I can't remember if I used Google or openl) it says "hull with drainage port, external plank, two pieces each for left and right".
When I started looking at the Ancre drawings and text I thought that the scuppers were a bit small. Initially I expected them to extend almost the full longitudinal space between the gun deck standards. But then I read the following (page 42 in the English translation) "she will be seen to heel very much, such that in this type of vessel the gunports may be awash". So if the gunports are awash, then the scuppers will be further underwater as they are lower. So I now think that the scuppers are so small so as to limit inflow of water when heeling yet be sufficient to allow drainage when upright. But this raises a potential structural issue: The prismatic space between the gun deck and main deck will probably not be well ventilated (even with the gratings there is unlikely to be a through draught), leading to a hot, humid, environment in the space, plus standing water in the corners between side shell and standards due to the small scupper openings. All contributing to ideal conditions for wet and dry rot. According to Ancre (Page 17 in the English translation) Requin was condemned in 1770, only nineteen years after launch. So I wonder if this was one of the causes of condemning, as rotting of the standards, main deck and side shell would likely compromise the structural integrity of the gun deck.
Not relevant to the model, but just a thought!

Interesting food for thought. Who knows what useful service time the designers had in mind. I read they were built for speed and were cheap to construct so longevity doesn't seem to be top on their list of priorities.

I had to looked that one up:
To be chuffed is a common British and Commonwealth slang term that primarily means to be very pleased, happy, or proud about something. It can also mean satisfied or delighted, though historically and regionally
In this post I wanted to display elements on the ships main rail. It seems to me I have to spend more time analyzing the plans and notes, then converting to English than actually building the ship. I've been telling myself all future builds, plans and commentary need to be in English!
After setting the port side it became necessary to level the main build board in the transverse direction allowing me to level over to set the rail elements for the starboard side. Check it out.
