Le Soleil d'Afrique, a French fourth rate frigate, was personally turned over to Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville by king Louis XIV of France (the Sun King, note the “L” on the mizzenmast flag) in 1688 to take fur trading forts from the English in Hudson Bay. It was done successfully.
Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville was born in 1661 in Longueuil, near Montreal. He and his brothers played a crucial part in the history of New France. The model was built from left over parts and scroungings.

Prominent puritan leader John Alden (among others) was captured. At the time, she was commanded by Simon-Pierre Denys de Bonaventure. In the book Acadia at the end of the 17th Century, it states that Simon-PIerre Denys, Sieur De Bonaventure, in 1691, commanded the Soleil d' Afrique which brought Villebon from La Rochell to Canada, calling first at Quebec" - "This is when my ancestor disembarked the ship.

"And then going to Acadia with supplies for the people and gifts for the Indians. On Sept 6, he left Quebec for Saint John and there surprised and captured a Boston vessel, which had on board John Nelson, a prominent merchant of Boston, and Col. Edward Tyng, who had been appointed Governor of Acadia, claimed by Massachusettes in virtue of its conquest by Phips in 1690. Discharign the cargo in Saint John the Soleil dAfrique went to Port Royal. In 1692 Bonaventure was in command of Envieux.

In the spring of 1691, aboard the Soleil d'Afrique a naval French cruiser under the command of Simon-Pierre Denys de Bonaventure. The Soleil d'Afrique first arrived at Quebec in the summer of 1691 and there she stayed until Frontenac was satisfied she was no longer needed for the protection of Quebec.

The Soleil d' Afrique was a fast ship and arrived ahead of the rest of the fleet.
When it came into the harbor near Quebec, there was a great celebration.
