Not sure what makes this particular square desirable but home improvement stores sell similar squares usually made from aluminum. I also recently bought a 1-1/2 inch version from Lee Valley tools.

Mainly because it has both measurements for dowels and wood strips.

I have a metal one i picked up at the lumber store but its heavy and clunky.
