A little late for this but I would like to find a wood ship modeler near me.
The closest builders group I can find online is a100 mile round trip to their meeting location.
I live in Van Nuys CA USA

I Googled ship model clubs in the LA area and got the following. Hope it is helpful. The club in Oxnard may be the closest but it appears to be over an hour drive west on 101. I remember hour drives that took two hours though when we lived out there.

Major ship model clubs in the Los Angeles area include the Ship Modelers Association (SMA), which meets in Anaheim, and the Channel Islands Maritime Museum Ship Model Guild which meets in Oxnard. Another local group is the South Bay Model Shipwrights. Additionally, the Legg Lake Model Boat Club caters to radio-controlled models.

Ship Modelers Association (SMA)
  • Focus: Building scale ship models, fostering nautical heritage, and a wide range of model types from wood, plastic, and metal.
  • Meetings: Third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM at the Hobby Day Building, 1127 N. Anaheim Blvd., Anaheim, CA.
  • Activities: Meetings feature "Show and Tell" sessions, seminars, participation in exhibits, and social events.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum Ship Model Guild
  • Focus: Building ship models from various materials and time periods, with an emphasis on maritime history.
  • Meetings: Third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum.
  • Activities: "Show and Tell" sessions where members discuss their progress on projects using wood, plastic, or metal construction.

South Bay Model Shipwrights
  • Focus: Learning and sharing information on shipbuilding techniques, with members building a variety of model ships from different timeframes.
  • Activities: Club meetings involve discussions on maritime construction, history, current events, and archaeology.

Legg Lake Model Boat Club
  • Focus: Radio-controlled (RC) model boat building.
  • Meetings: The club's website provides information on park closures and events, though no specific meeting schedule is listed online.

Thanks for the research. With the traffic being what it is in LA nowadays I'm looking at two hour trips minimum each way. The trip to Anaheim has taken me three hours one way that time of day.
I would really be satisfied to find a couple of modelers near me where we could meet, discuss techniques, etc.
I used to have a superintendent who lived in Oxnard. He had a fast car and said he could drive home faster than I could fly my Cessna 210 from Van Nuys airport to Oxnard airport. He took of from my house in the San Fernando valley and I drove to the airport. When I got to there I had to get fuel, do a preflight and file a flight plan.
I got it all done and took off. When I landed at Oxnard he was not there of course. Called him on his cell and he was struck in traffic in the west end of the valley. Won an easy $100 that day.

I have ships under way in Los Angeles (90004) and Oxnard. Happy to connect. I'm not expert by any means, but I have done the Rattlesnake privateer and HMS Surprise. USF Essex is underway at 90004, where I'm scratch building the masts and spars from a mistakenly purchased "Admiralty" kit. HMS Victory (Billingsboats) is underway in Oxnard where I'm about to install masts and go on from there.

I would love to get-together. Unfortunately right now I’m in the VAHospital on Wiltshire Blvd. My phone is dead and charger broke. I’m in isolation forthreemoredays. Should be out soon, fingers r. I would love to see your work and learn more about scratch building. I’ll pm you anyway to exchange info.
