How Tariffs Work for missing pieces. I contacted Occre for replacement of a missing part from my Diana wooden model ship kit. They said that due to the new US tariffs they could no longer send a free replacement since the regular post did not collect tariffs. They would send if I wanted to pay Fedex and any duties. So they sent the part, worth about 50 cents, by Fedex, costing me 10 pounds. They listed the value of the part as 1 cent. Fedex helpfully collected the tariff on 10 pounds (plus 1 cent) of $1.50 and charged $4.50 as a handling fee, all of which was billed to me by Fedex a few weeks later. So, the free replacement part for a kit previously imported from Spain under the pre-Trump tariff regime cost me $19.36. When the Supreme Court overturns its injunction on lower court rulings the tariffs are illegal sometime in 2030, I should hopefully get a refund of $1.50 from the US Treasury (maybe subject to a $4.50 handling fee by Fedex) leaving me out of pocket at least $17.86 for what would have previously been a cost of zero. And that is how Tariffs Work for model ship builders who already have their kits.
