The why or why not use different materials on model ships. some will say i would never use plastic on a wooden ship model some builders have no problem with it. Reasons given are if it is a wooden ship model everything should be made of wood except for some fittings and cannons which should be brass or pewter. There is also the value point of view. you see a model in a gallery well done wooden ship with 3D resin printed cannons, same model with brass turned or pewter cast cannons is one more valuable than the other in terms of material used? There would be no question if the cannons were cast in sterling silver, then you have the value of the silver to consider. In the case of resin, brass and pewter the value difference is nothing to consider. Pondering the question if a part on a real ship is metal should the part on the model be metal? Is it acceptable to make an anchor out of wood or turn cannons out of wood and dye them black? How about cannons turned out of Ebony? How about modelers using wooden tree nails for planking, in real ship they were iron planking spikes not wooden tree nails. Do rare materials tip the value scale? for example the same model subject one built of rare Ivorywood and one built from common Maple equal in workmanship does the material used really matter?
Years ago i remember seeing model ships in museums where the cannons are turning to dust small fittings hardly recognizable. Considering the lifespan of materials how long will 3d printed parts last?
When stored indoors away from direct sunlight and extreme conditions, well-cured resin prints can last 5 to 10 years or more. These settings are optimal for collectibles, prototypes, and display models. brass last forever pewter castings i do not know. Do you care if the model you built will last for generations or like an ice sculpture it is art in the moment or just the joy of the build and longevity is really of little concern.?
How long will sails and rigging line made of organic materials last?
is model ship building a mixed media? with 3D printing becoming more and more a part of the hobby maybe it's use should be considered. Replacing a figurehead every 5 years because the resin turned to dust. Using a sealer help resin. rigging line ect. last longer. Maybe accept the fact from dust to dust nothing last forever.
