My Amati Pinta kit came with a metal lifeboat yet the instructions say to paint it wood color? I doubt Columbus had an all metal lifeboat. Any suggestions? Thanks

There are some model ship companies that have cast metal parts in their kits. You could improve it by scratch build one or buy an aftermarket boat.

I was thinking the same but wasn’t sure how to do that, do you have any pictures or plans for one?

YUCK. Scratch build a BETTER boat. Or, buy a boat kit from Master Korabel or Falkonet and modify it to appear as a proper boat for a 15th century caravel, after you research boat design for boats of that period. Both Falkonet's and Master Korabel's boat kits are FANTASTIC. Search Google and eBay for "Master Korabel boat kit" or "Falkonet boat kit". Building a miniature planked boat kit like the one below is FUN and easier than it appears.

Here is a Falkonet kit from a 19th century boat to a 17th century pinnace:

Perhaps you can convert this Master Korabel yawl kit to the type of boat you need for only $25.00:

Here is a variety of boats from Falkonet.

To get the right size wood boat kit be sure to measure the length of the kit’s boat for proper scale…then get the boat kit in the closest size to the one you need. You can go ahead and paint up the metal boat. Add real wood parts and you may get something that looks ok from a whee distance…that is buried in deck stuff and boat accessories like poles and oars...just don’t tell anyone! :)

I painted the hulls on my Nina & Pinta using two shades of brown to give a relatively good wood effect, as these are mounted hull-up there was no need to do anything to the interior. For the Santa Maria I clad the hull with wood strips using contact adhesive.
