min wax gel stains

Hi Everyone, have a question on stains I used to use MIN WAX PENATRATING STAINS but could never get a color just to thin, I switched to the MIN WAX GEL STAINS USING A NON WAXED SHELAC AS BASE COAT, have tried the walnut and red elm GEL STAINS with pretty good results, THE STAINS ARE PRETTY THICK AND YOU HAVE TO MIX IT WELL and put on with a cloth I can not brush it on, have a lighter color ANTIQUE MAPLE GEL STAIN, but it is watery thin an has no color is this true wit all there lighter GEL STAINS OR DID I JUST GET A BAD ONE, any help will be greatly acknowledged.
