I am building a wood ship model. I have used miniwax polyurethane to protect a stained deck and it looks pretty good. Can I use the same polyurethane to protect a hull spray painted with acrylic paint? In this case Tamiya Acrylic mixed with their brand of thinner. If not, what is suggested?
thanks for the help

Hi Rich, I am not a paint specialist, but... I think you cannot use polyurethane on acrylic paints. You should use something called a varnish. One such varnish is Liquitex Professional Satin Varnish. Liquitex brand has a variety of those varnishes to choose from.

I have successfully sprayed Polyurethane over Acrylic.I did thin the varnish 40% white Spirit 60% .I would not brush paint it.Make sure varnish is Spirit based.Should say high VOC content on tin and clean brushes with White Spirit, not water.

Kind Regards

Nigel

I use matte polyurethane is a protective and finish coat on all my models over multiple surfaces, including acrylics, and have had no issues at all. I have used both water based poly and oil based poly. I am currently using water based matte polyurethane by MinWax on my Revenge build.

I'm with danielsje! I've used the same procedure & products on many of my models, & they look amazing, with zero problems! In my experience, you can't get better products than Minwax!

I'm just curious, why not just use the Tamiya clear product that they sell and have no issues? I think it comes in matte, satin and gloss finishes, but I have only used Tamiya on plastic models. For my woode models I have been using my wife's acrylic craft paints and varnishes (brush application). They have good spreadability and leveling, can be thinned easily and come in a huge range of colours. I trust them because she had been using them for folk art applications for many years before I started building ships, so I was able to leverage her expertise and brand knowledge. Once again, one is assured of compatibility within a brand range. And there are many brush and rattle can final finishes to choose from.

OK LET ME CHIP IN HERE FOR ONE WHO HAS NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PAINT, EVEN WITH AIR BRUSH DON AND PAINT DO NOT GO TOGETHER PERIOD, I HAVE BEEN AVOIDING PAINTING ON MY SHIPS. UNTIL I SAW MARRATENS POST USING ECOLINE PAINT PENS INK WATER BASED FOR ME THEY WORK VERY, VERY WELL SO FAR LOTS OF COLORS TO CHOOSE FROM ONE THING I FOUND OUT YOU NEED TO USE A DEGREASERNON THE WOOD TO KEEPIT FROM SPLOTCHING, ESPECIALLY ON BASSWOOD. JUST ME. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE ALL DON

Tangopapa, I don't have a local Tamiya seller and didn't want to wait to put together an order. The retailer I usually use is out of matt, and all I have is glossy.
I do have Vallejo sold nearby and might try theirs.

By the way, is there a post anywhere that spells out homemade thinner and cleaner for various brands of Acrylic? There seem to be some differences. Wish I could find a straight forward chart that shows both homemade and commercial products and which brand of acrylic they are geared towards.

Great help, thanks all.

Richard, I have been using clear matt acrylic spray over Tamiya acrylic paint with no problems.
