Model Expo

Here is my frustration: I feel upset when someone reacts so aggressively after a polite, reasonable request. This response is long, combative, and laced with passive-aggressive righteousness disguised as fact-sharing. All I did was ask for a conversation without politics, and instead got a lecture with moral grandstanding.

I understand that you feel strongly about this subject. However, my original request was simply to avoid political discussion in this space. Not because I dismiss the seriousness of the topic, but because I believe this forum is better served by keeping our focus on shared interests and treating each other with kindness and respect, regardless of differing opinions.

Your message, while framed around facts, was not just informational; it carried a tone of judgment and moral comparison, which is exactly the kind of energy I hoped to avoid here. I’m not asking for silence or censorship, just for courtesy, and for space to connect without being pulled into confrontation.

Thank you for understanding.
Hi Jim,

I have chosen to not see the content of the posting you are addressing here (specifically, the content of the poster) so I won't be able to be detailed in my support. But once again I feel it is important to acknowledge your outstanding work on the forum as an administrator. As long as there are folks (and I guess there will always be folks) who cannot abide by playing within constraints on public forums then we will need people like you. I believe reasonable men and women will agree to operate inside of those constraints. In this thread we saw several members acknowledge the rules and de facto agree to play by them. I'm sorry that is not always the case and for the unnecessary (albeit necessary, it seems) burden it places on you. You have my deepest respect.

A while ago Donnie wrote a nice piece that I suppose rarely gets read:

Paul, my friend,
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words. I truly appreciate them, but I don’t see anything particularly special in what I do. It’s simply part of the responsibility we’ve voluntarily taken on as admins and mods: to help keep this forum as welcoming and respectful as possible for everyone around the globe.

We all bring different perspectives and styles to the table, not to mention language barriers, but what matters most is that shared commitment to fairness and goodwill. And yes, you’re right, most people are reasonable when given the space and example to be.

Thank you again, mon ami, for your continued support and for always speaking with such clarity and grace.

I ordered a kit from Model Expo last year, duty and postage to Canada
was about as much as the Kit that was on sale. No bargain for me.
better for modelers to scratch build in Canada than buy kits especially
If they are building models of the Clipper ship era.

I have purchased fittings etc from Cornwall U.K., in the past with
no problems and great customer service. Great Hobbies in
Canada has kits and fittings and good customer service , give
them a try .
Life is always a matter of making adjustments and coping with
the times , make the best of it and enjoy your shipmodeling
hobby.
Cheers from Winova

as you all can see under my name is "staff member" it is my personal belief the staff should not get involved in public arguments nor stand as hell hounds to protect Ship of Scale. We are all adults here and do not need policing

However, i do stand with jimsky he did politely ask no politics and although clever in the wording that was ignored.

so now you have 2 staff members asking don't do that and i will add please

My apologies to the staff members , since I was the original poster of this thread can I request it be deleted, entirely .

Hi Bobby,
There’s no need to apologize, you’ve done nothing wrong. You started the thread in good faith, and you shouldn’t feel responsible for the way others chose to behave. Unfortunately, these things sometimes happen in public spaces, but that doesn’t reflect on you.

And thank you for your thoughtfulness and respect. It doesn’t go unnoticed.

Again, Thanks to Jim for the gentle reminder, and apologies for my own knee-jerk reaction to the issue of trade congestion presented.
The political and physical boundaries are human constructs as are the issues arising from them.
The land, the lakes, waterways and natural resources are free gifts endowed to all by our Creator, who only asks for gratitude, good stewardship and our endeavor to co-exist harmoniously in return.
To Jim's credit, he asks that this space remains reflective of that harmony and that we retain the discipline to restrain our passions in order to preserve a place for all of us to co-exist peacefully, however contentious the current political atmosphere may be.

You Humble and Obedient Servant, Pete G. ;)

I understand the responsibilities of admins and mods, having been there, done that. What everyone needs to remember is that the top responsibility truly lies with the member. They agreed to abide by the rules when they requested to join.

There is no upcoming postal strike and in my opinion the tariff is a bogus
Canada post is already partially on strike. They're refusing overtime and threatening a work stoppage at some point if they cannot agree to terms.

This whole thing started when Canada refused to help the USA stop the influx of illegal people from all over the world and the influx of drugs from coming into the USA. If you guys won't help us then you'll just have to put up with the way things are. They will get worse as time goes on. I for one am in favor of vastly reduced costs of doing business with Canada but it's a two way street so you should find a way to help us get rid of the illegals and the drugs.
This kind of political commentary has no place in a modeling group.
And the falsehoods repeated here have no place in any conversation.
This whole thing started with POTUS.
Educate yourself on illegal immigration.
Canada, particularly Quebec, was swamped with illegal immigration coming from the USA. The USA did nothing.
Illegal guns pour into Canada from the USA. The USA does nothing.
The amount of illegal drugs from Canada to the USA is negligible - almost 0 per cent. The USA refuses to acknowledge facts.
And if you want to talk about helping the USA why not mention Desert Storm, Sept. 11th, Afghanistan, Hurricane Katrina, LA wildfires... the list is almost endless of Canadians helping Americans in their time of need.
By the way, the tariffs on Canadian goods are on may items that the USA needs: Lumber for your construction industry (esp. rebuilding LA) aluminum for the auto industry (roughly 90 per cent comes from Quebec), 4 million barrels of oil daily from Alberta that the USA needs, electricity from Ontario and Quebec that your northern states need, potash for your farmer's fields... All of that translates into higher costs paid by Americans not Canadians.
We have a free trade deal negotiated and signed by POTUS who now calls it a terrible deal....

Apologies for continuing this political discussion but I only come here on Saturday mornings and reacted to Norgale's post before seeing the fallout.
I simply added my clarification to what I consider to be falsehoods that should not go unchallenged.
Here endeth the commentary.

This is your statement, Derek: This kind of political commentary has no place in a modeling group.
... so why is additional clarification and reiteration necessary?

Because it was an attempt to be respectful and polite to the group and the moderators.
I wrote my initial reaction to what I perceived to be Norgale's insulting comments about my country and fellow Canadians before reading the rest of the thread where there had been attempts to quell the uproar caused by his comments.
My second post that begins "Apologies..." was an attempt at exactly that - an apology for continuing the debate and an attempt to return the discussion to matters of modeling and not leave my last word on the issue as a political statement.

O.k. I get the temptation of the tar baby. (See politically incorrect folk tales of generations past. ) I got my own paw stuck in it last week. So now can we all get free of this cycle of circular Karmic Attachment, endless recrimination and agree to let it go? I am sufficiently exhausted and want to give it a rest...Please...

Exactly what I was trying to do
