Model Making - Work or Play?

I have been in this model building business for about 65 years. Every kit I have built has had some sort of a challenge to it. Some have been great and some have been a grind. It has put me on an ever increasing learning curve. But all have put a smile on my face when I was done and can look back at how I got there. I do this for me and it is a form of meditation of sorts after a frustrating day at work or just life its self. Modelling has taught me to calm down, be patient and look forward to the end result. Oh and don't discount all those tools you'll buy to make your job easier. I could build a space shuttle in back yard now.

You aren’t disagreeing Allan. You make the same point as me, that doing things you love isn’t ‘work’ but pleasure, even playing as I used to ‘play’ with the full sized aircraft of the RAF.
I enjoy our hobby and have done for years and years, like most of us here. Yet we constantly use the word ‘work’ to describe our activities. Actually I try to avoid it but it does creep into my posts from time to time. :)
Isn't "WORK" one of those four letter words momma used to say your never supposed to say out loud in public! :D

As a professional model builder/restoration guy I have to say it is work.
But it’s also a very enjoyable work.
I have numerous projects going all at the same time.
I also have at least one ship model project of my own going on as well.
And I mess around with rc boats.
So it’s all consuming.
There are days where I think ….why did I do this.
Then other days where I’m blessed to have the best job in the world.
Double edged sword in a way.

Further to my comments. When I started building in the early sixties there was no information on what you were building. You just looked around to find your subject if you could. My first wooden ship was from a defunct company called Dikar. It was the Bluenose. Built in the eighties before the inter web. OOTB
, no skills just what I had learned from many plastic kits .Fast forward to now. We have almost unlimited information on anything you can think of. We live in a golden age of information for model builders. For those that are new to this forum or those who have put your stuff away for a while, please come back. We need you as you are the future. Get your kids or grand kids involved. Buy them a snap together kit from Revell, get them hooked. Just get them interested. That way model companies stay involved and don't cash out. Just my two cents worth.
