Decided to make this thread to show what I am working on between updates on the Oro Jackson. https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/...irates-capt-gol-d-roger-show-one-piece.16762/

If this is too out of place on this forum I will happily have it removed. I tend to jump from project to project as I get stuck on one. So I figured I would use this as a way to keep in touch on the site till I have an update on the ship.

Onto the craft in question!

This is for November (better planning on my part this time) and is a cardboard version of a monster from RuneScape classic - the king black dragon.

At first I wanted to stick true to the polygons used in the classic game, but after many attempts and failing to reverse engineering the math -- props to the scratch builders going from pictures alone -- I tried a polygon approach then remembered - this is being built to be destroyed haha so less time spent the better. Following a tutorial on YouTube for a Stich from the Disney movie, adapted to a dragon shape has been going well.

Current progress almost 2 heads:

Take the best siloetye side and cut it out IMG_20250819_181554819.jpgIMG_20250819_182732229.jpgthe two side will be connected with hot cglue. You could keep the connectors flat but I found curving them ahead of time let them better fit around the shape. For hard angles, bending before glueing is helpful. As this is all going to get overed up it's ok to have some overhang and to overlap as one joint touches the other. IMG_20250819_190855066.jpgto add shape to the sides simply glue down scrap to bulk. For the eye and nose ridge I made these cresaunt shapes. IMG_20250819_195823515.jpg
Then smooth out all the lumps by adding a paper towel over top. I think I used both normal kids craft glue and hot glue for this part and they both worked.

It was better to attach the eyes first then the fluff. So I'll do that for the third head lol. Though the middle head is supposed to be slightly bigger with larger horns. I wonder if I will do it. The perfectionist in me wants to but I've already made the eyes and horns for the normal size haha.

The scales are just cut steamers.

Getting the diamonds to size and shape for the eyes was rough but some tiny part of my brain remembered the concepts from theories in geometry with squares to triangles and mathing out missing sides to get it to lay flat enough for hot glue to do the trick.

What a cool and creative project. I’ll be cheering for you to make it by November, and you’re off to a great start.

As you previously observed, this is being built to be destroyed, so even if it bothers you that the middle head is the wrong size, it’s not going to bother you for long. ROTF

I LOVE IT ! Don't tell the other guys, but I play D & D and I still paint miniatures for it. Here is a new one I just finished for an upcoming campaign. So, I love the Black Dragon ! I'll definitely be following this. :)

Awesome paint job, Jeff. I used to play D&D many years ago.I imagine it would still be fun if I knew any still playing. Seems like most folks are into the card games now.

Thanks. :) If you look, you can still find places to play. There is also ways to play online. Look at Roll 20 (that's a link). You can make an account for free and play online. Also, check out the card shops to see if they have games going on as well. I play in a shop that is mostly card games.

@Corsair That is such a cool mini!!!! And the paint job is exquisite!

@Namabiiru I can also vouch for roll 20 -- it's super fun

Other commentary
I used Roll 20 during covid when I was playing Pathfinder and attempting to dm -- Pathfinder is a split off from DND rule set when DND came out with the one between the 3-5th editions so it plays similar. We have also had a lot of fun with the star finder variant which is like space DND haha. Dispite so many races I don't recognize an elephant one. Also is it a monk?

It's not much. Only like maybe a half an in or so as seen from the outline. But still an amusing amount to make my brain happy without too much extra effort haha

I love the way the paper towel makes it look "filled out" ! It's perfect ! My wife came in while i was looking and wanted to see the other pictures then I mentioned the ship you are making and she wanted to see it and was amazed at your work ! She said you have a real talent and you should pursue it as a career. :)

Thanks for the compliment on the paint job. I've been painting minis almost as long as I've been playing D&D (started playing in 1976). Yes, it is a monk. The race is called Loxodon. It is in the "Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica" book. It will be our first use of the new 2024 rules.
