I recently noticed this forum and was intrigued with the two stagecoach build logs. Also recently went on a holiday house open house tour and saw a similar stagecoach model on display. It looked interesting and something fun to build. Well, Santa got my letter and now I have a new project to work on as a little break from ship building. You will enjoy working on the stagecoach. It is rather impressive how they designed the compartment area which is what is know as barrel shaped. On stagecoaches, barrel-shaped means that when viewed from the side, top, and front she will have rounded edges. It might not make sense now but once you get to the construction of the actual compartment you'll understand what I mean. Brother, you'll have a blast.

It almost makes me want to start there. But...I think I’ll follow the plan book. The materials and plans all look well done. I’m looking forward to starting.
 
After studying the plans and the work book the build sequence seems very logical. I was looking for the “aha!” moments and it seems the work book has highlighted many of them. I’m impressed so far. I will start on the frame assembly. I started on the 3 reaches, chamfering edges, drilling required holes and attaching bolts. The kit uses a rubbery type material for the very small nuts. Clearly a cost saving move that I get. These parts are so small once painted they will look authentic. I’d rather the mfg spend money on high quality wood and laser process. In the event you would like to gather more motivation for your build, what would you think about having the cast of, "The Good, the Bad, an the Ugly" standing by throughout your build? Mind you that if you decide to use them, you'd have to size them as a means of getting them at the correct scale of 1:12 to compliment your build. You have to print them from their boots to the top of their head in this manner. The Good, (who is actually 6'-4" tall) should be printed at 6 3/8", the Bad, (who is actually 6'-2" tall) should be printed at 6 3/16", and the Ugly, (who is actually 5-7" tall) should be printed at 5 9/16". Raymond, thanks for the pics. Your stage coach looks great! Wonderful work from scratch. I will definitely use the pics for some references. I worked on additional components for the undercarriage structure. What you have so far looks great. I especially like that the metalwork is readily available with the kit. I also had to scratch build those which meant cutting the brass strips to size, bending them to the correct shape, soldering them, filing them down with small files, and finally painting them. Mind you, that process was repeated for every metal piece. Was I a glutton for punishment? You betcha Buddy!!! ;)

I made some more progress assembling the front brace header. The kit provides two sets of upper and lower brace header fillers. One set is used as a jig to assemble the top and bottom irons and bolts. The other set is used on the model when this piece is added. This made the construction relatively straight forward although tightening the bolts was a challenge. The piece will be disassembled when applying to the under carriage assembly. Work continues on the build. Worked on the brake system, including the brake push rods, brake beam and pads. The lower part of the brake lever is just dry fit as I will not put this piece on until the coach is fully assembled.
The third pic is the rear axle assembly put together.
With all the undercarriage components done it’s time to pain them and assemble the undercarriage.

I am so glad that you are continuing to progress on your stagecoach. I like the view of your axle. When I did mine, I had no clear way of making them so I improvised and made it work. Seeing how it is actually made is nice so thanks for posting it.

Lots of painting over the last two days. First I primed all the undercarriage components with white and then two coats of yellow. I also assembled the completed components (three reaches, brake system, brake beam, front and rear brace, rear axle with brackets and supports as well. The brake lever is just loosely fitted. I will not permanently attach it until the final stage.

It's looking great Buddy. Seeing it this far does light a fire under your butt in order to reach the next step doesn't it? Looking forward to more updates.

The work continues. I have finished the running gear, the double tree and single trees as well as the two thorough braces. I’ve shown the gear and trees unfinished and painted. The thorough braces were made by lapping 5 36” long pieces of the supplied vegetable fiber gasket material cut to a width of 3/16” for each brace. These will be darkened later with an acrylic burnt umber thinned by water. The braces were a bit of an innovation in stage coaches as they made the pulling easier for the horse team and the ride a bit more comfortable for the passengers. Next up are the wheels.

Hey Buddy,
I did not know that type of material existed. For my stagecoach I had to use actual leather and wrapped it around about 3 or 4 times due to its thickness. We live and learn.

The materials supplied in this kit are well thought out. It’s a fun build.
