The Fram........
The ship with which Norwegian polar explorers explored the Arctic and Antarctic between 1893 and 1912.
The Fram was built by Colin Archer in his Larvik shipyard, at the request of and in collaboration with Fridtjof Nansen. It was to be the strongest, most robust ship ever built. It had to withstand the rigors of Fridtjof Nansen's three-year voyage across the ice floes above the North Pole. In this way, the ship could move between the glaciers without getting stuck.
The same ship was used by Otto Sverdrup in Arctic Canada. Roald Amundsen also used the Fram for his great expedition to the South Pole. The Fram has thus carried out voyages of discovery and exploration to both the North and South Poles! She is one of the world's most famous sailing ships.
The Fram has been adapted to each of these expeditions, and has been transformed three times. In collaboration with the Fram Museum in Oslo, this kit has been recreated from the 1893 original, as the Fram was designed and built by Colin Archer and Fritjof Nansen. This was a three-masted schooner equipped with an auxiliary steam engine and a characteristic round hull. This construction enabled the Fram to rise out of the ice rather than being crushed by the powerful ice masses.
Today, the polar research vessel FRAM is open to visitors as a museum in Norway. It is an important window on the exciting and challenging world of polar exploration.
The original photo shows the Fram in the ice floes of the Arctic Ocean. It was taken in March 1894 by Fridtjof Nansen.
