National Maritime Museum (Het Scheepvaartmuseum) - Amsterdam

[CarlosE]

The National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam left a strong impression on me. I expected to see ship models and learn some maritime history, but the museum offers much more than that.

"Model of a man of war of 68 guns"

[CarlosE]

Model of a stern yatch.
"A yacht was a small and fast ship, used by the navy for reconnoissance and for carrying messages to the fleet. In the course of the seventeenth century, ships used to ferry officials from the admiralties, provinces and towns were also called yatchs. The Dutch distinction of stern yatch comes from its ornamental stern, with depictions of mythical sea creatures"

Model of the Royal Barge
"King William I commissioned the construction of the royal barge in 1816. The design was based on the barge of the French emperor Napoleon".

[CarlosE]

Model of a transport ship of the Dutch navy, similar to the Merwede. Petrus van Loo. 1832
(Model on loan from Rijksmuseum).

[CarlosE]

Model of the ship D'Keulse Galy.
"Ships like these were used to abduct enslaved people from West Africa and transport them to the colonies in America."

And then......

From the museum web page:

"This exhibit of ship models presents a beautiful picture of luxury pleasure craft through the ages. Each replica is exquisite. Yachts of all kinds: boyers, round bottoms and more. In many cases they were just as artfully crafted as the real thing, with all the decoration right down to the tiniest rich detail. You can also admire models of modern yachts, such as the catamaran 'Zeeman', the Volvo Ocean Racer 'ABN Amro 1' and the three-master 'Maltese Falcon'. Also included are curiosities such as the amphicar.".

While on an assignment in the Netherlands I spent countless hours in this museum. Probably the best in the world.

Yes, it's a nice place to be. There are also two nice models in the Tulip museum (one of them bye )

[Short John Bronze]

Thanks for these photos. I note that none of the models bother to show coils of rope ends on the belaying pins. Good! I think I might emulate this historical model practice.

I visited that museum many times. They have an impressive display of old models there. Although I was disappointed with the quality of some of the models it is worth pointing out they were made a long time ago with limited resources.
Definitely worth a visit if you are ever in Amsterdam.

So far from the ones I have visited I agree with you. Not just the ships models but other exhibitions are fantastic.
