What was the name of the first operational steam powered warship in any North American Navy? Not the Demologos, she only saw one day of service in the US navy.

While the USS Fulton (built in 1814) was the first steam warship in North America overall, 1839 was a pivotal year for steam power in the region, featuring the first steam-powered warship in the Republic of Texas Navy and a major modernization of the U.S. Navy's steam fleet.

The Zavala is historically significant as the first steam-powered warship in the Gulf of Mexico and the first in the Texas Navy.

Origin: Originally a passenger steamship named the Charleston, she was purchased by the Republic of Texas in 1838.

Commissioning: She was officially commissioned into the Texas Navy in March 1839.

Role: The Zavala was a side-wheel steamer armed with several large guns. In 1840, she played a crucial role in the Texas Navy's campaign against Mexico, specifically in the Yucatan, making her one of the first steam warships in North America to see actual combat-related deployment.
