Naval History Quiz

Yessir Mark served as a cadet during his sea year at the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY then went navy and subsequently the space program, as did his brother Scott. Scott could have fit many of the descriptions above as I believe he graduated from Fort Schuyler and would have gone to sea on the Empire State V.

According to Wikipedia they were the Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy (didn't know either had a "Navy") in 1843.
Yes, the Republic of Texas had a Navy. They sat in Galveston and rotted but were enough of a deterrent that Santa Anna had to take his army overland up through Mexico with very long supply lines and near impossibility of reinforcement and was defeated at San Jacinto (where the battleship Texas used to be berthed).
