My first posting here and new to ship modeling. Still deciding on my first ship build, I will probably go with a plastic model since I do have considerable plastic model building experience, but never have attempted a ship in my years of modeling.

Can anyone here recommend a place to get aftermarket parts----- I am looking for ship accessories more (decorations and accents) for ship models--- like carvings, photo etched parts, cast parts..and flags.

**********I guess I should have clarified ----Im looking for 16th,17th and 18th century ship parts......

Hello Mir, depending on the ship type\period and scale chosen the aftermarket parts might be available. On a scale of 1/350 and 1/700, there are many manufactures and available online. Here are a few to start with...

LionRoar, White Ensign Models, Gold Medal Models, FlyHawk, Tamiya, Eduard, Tom's work, North Star, and many, many more. As you may choose the ship, look for the aftermarket...or first look for the aftermarket available parts and then choose the kit based on their availability. It is possible that aftermarket parts are available from more than one manufacturers. you better do very extensive research.. you may even be stuck with the desicition.;)

Agree with Jims comments about where to buy aftermarket stuff.
In addition there's a company called Pontos that makes fabulous photo etch for plastic kits.

With regards to my posting, I should have been more specific.............. Im looking for 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th century ship parts

I don't really know of many aftermarkets manufacturers for Sail ships, However, should you decide to build Victory on a 1/100 scale by Heller, one of our members Daniel @dafi made upscale PE parts. You can buy individual frets or as a complete set. If you will decide, you can PM him.

here is his Victory build

Check the Daniels web site The Victory and Beyond

There is a great selection for ships of sail parts at hismodel.com. It has specific parts for both wooden and plastic classic kits. Great service.

First, welcome to the forum,

I would like to talk you into doing a wood ship model rather than a plastic kit. I have one foot in the wood ship model world and the other in the plastic and card model world. I have been a judge at local and regional IPMS contests and have several awards for my models in plastic contests. no offence to the plastic world but plastic models are basically assembling parts with the emphasis on painting, finish and the quality of the assembly. Wood ship models are built from plans and drawings and if you need a figurehead or stern decorations you make them from scratch. From my experience a wood ship model gives much more satisfaction than building a plastic kit.

Try a starter kit ModelExpo's Long boat is a very nice kit and will teach you several skills that are needed to build a large model, and it won't break your wallet.
