The idea is really great...I see it as a great opportunity to learn new things

A couple is issues back, someone wrote about being thanked “ for my service,” he said it that makes him feel a little uncomfortable because he believes first responders should also be thanked. I agree with him. But I also feel that way but for a different reason.

I was in the U.S. Navy on board a navy oill tanker (USS Pawcatuck AO 108) from 1961 to 1963. I never faced any real danger, the most dangerous thing that happened to me during those two years on the ship was the time we were refueling a destroyer and it lost its steering, and we had an emergency breakaway that caused the hose connection to the pump on our ship to snap and black oil flooded the well deck.

Plus a six-month deployment in the Mediterranean with liberty in ports like the French Riviera or the Isle of Majorca weren’t exactly dangerous. So there really is no need to thank me. But I appreciate the thought anyway.

But the irony of it all was that during those years, sailors stationed at Norfolk Naval Base (our home port) were not at all welcomed by the civilian population. Parents didn’t want their daughters to associate with sailors, let alone date them. There was a common saying back then “No sailors or dogs aallowed.”

I hope the attitude in Norfolk has changed since then.
