Hi all,

I am new to wooden ships, but grew up building plastic models and got back into the hobby about a decade ago. I'd consider myself on the lower end of advanced with plastic, and wood has always appealed to me. I know wooden ships are a whole different animal than a modern injection-molded plastic kit.

I was fortunate enough to get to see the Hermione under construction in Rochefort back in 2009, and then again when it sailed to Philadelphia in the United States. So, of course the Hermione is a ship I have to build.

I bought the Artesania Latina kit, but obviously it's way too much for a first wooden ship kit, so I also bought the Artesania Latina La Provencale fishing boat to build as a first kit. If I don't hate it and myself after it's done, I'll probably get a privateering ship or something to level up my skills before deciding if that's an appropriate time to attempt the Hermione.

This is pretty much where it sits at this time. So, I guess I'll see if this is something I can actually do.

I'm also salivating over that Pavel Nikitin Viking longship that just got released, but am not sure, looking at the size, if I have space for it. We shall see.

Welcome aboard SOS! Glad you started to build a Dorry instead of a Hermione as your first build ;) But you will build Le Hermione, one day.

Welcome to the forum.

What part of the USA do you hail from, there are many members spread around, who know if one is close to you.

Salutations from up north. I have built plastic since the early 60's. I have built a few wooden ships and believe it to be a Zen kind of thing. With both plastic and wood it teaches patience and I find it to be a good way to decompress. I am currently building the HMB Endeavour. It is a big step up from the Dikar Bluenose I built long ago. Your first foray is a good choice. As a finishing carpenter my advise is to purchase some good tools for ship building. They will make your life less frustrating and give you joy when you look at the finished product. Remember, Respect The Wood. Good luck.

Thanks, all. I'm from Sacramento, California. I've got a fair amount of good tools, and I just go some sanding blocks of various sizes and shapes that look useful. I think the main thing will be clamping solutions - the challenge I had with the first plank I put on the Provencale last night was in positioning it correctly and getting it to hold where I wanted it. I just bought a bunch of 5/8" binder clips to help out, but I always love buying a new tool.
