Hi guys. I'm building Occres Erebus, but rather than build as for the Franklin expedition where she was ultimately lost, I want to build as for Ross's earlier and successful expedition to the Antarctic. I will therefore not be installing the propeller as she was not fitted with an engine at that point in time. Can anyone advise me on the state of her hull protection for the Ross expedition? Specifically, was the bow plating fitted (as it was subsequently for the Franklin expedition), and was the hull copper plated (as she would be in the Pacific and would be exposed to worm damage). Any other info would be great too.
I've added a picture of my Beagle (I'm building ships of exploration) which I did some time ago. The rigging was completed by a model maker (Terry Dale) at the Auckland Museum of the Sea as I ran out of time before heading overseas. (Unfortunately my son was transporting it in the back of his truck when his friend got in and threw her luggage in over the back seat without looking - I've yet to see the damage !

Great job on that Beagle Harry but horrifying to know the model is probably damaged. Your photo shows you have skills so hopefully you can reconstruct her.

For the Ross expedition, the ships Erebus and Terror were not fitted with bow plating or copper sheathing, unlike the later Franklin expedition.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

No Bow Plating:

The Erebus and Terror did not have the bow plating that would later be fitted to the ships of the Franklin expedition, which was a measure taken to help them navigate the ice, And The Erebus and Terror were not copper sheathed, meaning their hulls were not protected from the damage of marine worms and other organisms that can damage wooden ships.

Why No Protection?

The Ross expedition took place in the 1830s, before the widespread use of copper sheathing became standard for ships that would be exposed to warmer waters and worm damage.

The Franklin Expedition:

The Franklin expedition, which took place in the 1840s, did have bow plating and copper sheathing, which were considered necessary for Arctic exploration.

Lifeboat Copper:

There is speculation that the copper sheeting found near the sites of the Franklin expedition could have been from the lifeboats, some of which were whaling boats and large enough to have had copper installed.

Hi. Thank- you, that's great information and I'll progress my build accordingly. I'm awaiting the arrival of Occres 'Endurance' and have been reading the various build logs and picked up so many great ideas and tips for that build too.
