If you are after a black finish, a patina, like for stained glass or Blacken-It, might work. You can also check out AK Interactives Real Metal finish. It's a buffable wax based paste that comes in a wide variety of different metallic colors and it is pretty realistic looking. If you are going for a gold leaf finish, you can also get faux gold leaf sheets online. It's surprisingly easy to apply and pretty forgiving.

Typically, for me, painting metal starts with a good quality primer.
Cannot argue with that
In my model making I've always used Plasti - kote sandable primer (grey) for plastic, metal, and wood surfaces with great success and never any loss of detail even with a bit of over spray, it's just an all around fantastic primer. I don't know about now (because it's been a number of years since I used it,) but Testors Metalic paints came in various finishes, some for direct applications and some to be buffes to the desired finish,but you had to coat the steel color or it would actually rust.
I use automotive primer from the auto parts store. works great and it's cheap.
