Is there any advantage to planking the hull using short strips as opposed to one long strip? I have seen some build logs that shows short strips being used. I tend to plank with the long strips that come with the kit and as per the kit instructions.
This is a good question. Technically I see no difference. if it is a double-plank, then it doesn't matter. The longer strips are mostly more convenient to lay down. It will probably make the hull stiffer because of the less plank's butt connections.

In case of first planking on frame or bulkhead, the use of short strips will more easily lead to inconsistent, uneven curving.
In case of second (or single) planking one could however make a point for using strips with a length proportional to the real length of the planks.

Either works. Some people cut the planks to give it a more scale look.
