Plastic ships wheel

I went looking for a wooden ships wheel and the only one I could find was kinda bulky. I did find this "gold" plated plastic one that is the right size and shape(in my mind). Is there any way to paint/color this to look decent(like wood) and actually have the finish stick?

Hi Don,
Yes you can and it is not that difficult

I use AV Vallego (Acrylic paint)

I have a step by step guide here, which is suitable for this

At the top are the color numbers of the paint mentioned

Strip off the chrome and yellow lacquer before painting- the paint will stick better. Just spray it with caustic oven cleaner and let it work overnight in a ziploc bag, then scrub vigorously with a toothbrush.

That sounds like a good idea. I have two wheels so I can try it on one.

Just for info Fume free Easy Off doesn't work. I'll have to try some good old lye.

Ammonia usually will strip off the "chrome" finishes in a few minutes. There will be a primer layer remaining which I leave to help bond with acrylic paint.

All I had was Sudsy Ammonia and it didn't work. Even after an hour or so. I must have super gold plating.
