I recently decided to replace Screaming Mimi my 4” Jarmac disc sander. With a fixed speed of 7000RPM it was too noisy and often burnt what I was trying to sand.
The Sander built by Byrnes Model Machines is of course the ultimate but is out of production and used units if they can be found cost more than I wanted to spend. I then looked locally for a replacement but all that I found were single speed machines turning faster than I wanted.
Based on favorable reviews on Amazon I bought Proxxon 125e Disc Sander. Photo below. Although the machine plugs into a standard 110v domestic household outlet, it is powered by a 12v DC motor. DC motors do not lose torque at low RPMs like an AC motor. Internal electronics convert 110v AC to 12v DC. For European buyers a 240 volt version is available.
This well made machine hums instead of screams and is balanced so it doesn’t try to march across the workbench like my Jarmac did. The table can be tilted and a pair of knobs make securing easy. A well made miter gage rides in a T track.
Selling a close to $200 US this is a good choice modelers wanting a variable speed medium priced stationary disc sander.
