Proxxon planer

I have this machine and principally have been quite happy with it. The only thing I don't quite like is the minimum thickness of the strips you want to plane. You cannot get much under 2 mm, which in some cases is too thick for me. And the other drawback is the relatively high price, at least for us retired modellers.

I love these machines. Does exactly as described very well. I’ve got the full size versions for general wood working, and they prove to be extremely useful. In fact I get a kick out of using these machines every time.

Have you tried using a cheater board to get under 2mm? Tack glue the board you are using onto a thicker board. You should be able to get lower than 2mm that way.

Good idea Sambini! No I haven't tried that but for sure I will the next time I need something thinner.

I have both and have no regrets. You will learn to live in a 3” world because of the planing size but thats not as bad as it sounds.

Le probleme du rabotage de faibles epaisseurs obtenues en collant sur une planche plus epaisse, reste la recuperation de la planche fine une fois rabotée car il est difficile de la decoller sans casse.....Avez vous une methode ??

Hi Hans
i use a sled which holds the piece While it slides through the planer. If the piece is very thin then you could only use a thickness sander as the planer would destroy the wooden blank. In this case i use a glue stick to hold it onto the sled. Glue sticks are very easy to remove without breaking.

Something that works well is double-sided carpet tape. Just make sure the substrate you choose is flat. I use baltic birch plywood for the carrier and when adjusting my planer, I take VERY light cuts on each pass. Also - plane a board longer than you will need for the finished stock to eliminate any snipe at either end.

Les bâtons de colle sont ils ceux que l'on utilise dans les pistolets a colle chaufants ?
