Question about ship modeling from scratch

What a great thread.!!
A little sad too though. So many models and great modelers. And so few of the younger generations are here among us. Like so many other things, we may be living in the last great era of model building. Sixty years ago kids built models....mostly boys, I’ll admit. Today, if it doesn’t exist on a video screen there is no interest. Kids don’t play in the dirt or build ‘things’ with their hands. Play outside.??? Oh NO.! It’s too hot (cold.) out there. “My headset (Gameboy, iPod, PS2, computer, — whatever..) doesn’t work outside.!!”
Really.??
Did we teach them this.?? Are WE responsible for this.?? OMG, what have we done.?
Redface :(

V8 engine to the visible man
Built those... plus the visible P-51 Mustang... My first model was a plastic F-4U Corsair in 1965. I remember building it on the kitchen floor while my mom was cooking dinner. After I glued the wings on upside down and started crying, mom said - "Don't worry honey, you will build a lot more models than that in your life I am sure"...

Moms have a way of predicting the future I guess....

Oh I freely admit I spoiled my 2 rotten after things went down with their egg donor. Lets just say, you remember that woman in TX that drown her kids because she was tired of being a mom? My ex wife has the same problems and refuses treatment, and thats how a trucker wound up raising 2 kids alone from ages 4 and 2. I spoiled the living daylights out of them trying to make up somehow, but they did turn out to be decent people. Thank God.

Very cool.!!!

I started also to built ship models from Kit. after several years of being exposed to construction from Scratch, I really wanted to progress to this level. In my opinion, in such a construction, there is something more beautiful and faithful to the original, without harming anyone, specifically those who build from Kit (as I am building Priceland today).
I'm interested to see in a generation or two how technology (like 3D printing) will affect how models are built.
By the way, the first models I built as a child in the 1980s were of airplanes, and since my parents had no money for plastic models, we bought the models for paper making.
Somehow The things we loved as children , remain with us all over our lives :)Ship-1

My motto's always been 'when it's right, it's right'
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night?
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight

I probably messed up those lyrics...I remember the song vividly though. (1970-something). Great harmony. Don't remember the group. Mixed guys and gals.....

@mrshanks & @Clair G ----- THIS is why you got locked out.!!!!!

I started out with plastic in my pre-teen years because the kits were plentiful and relatively cheap. I progressed to wood airplane kits. I remember pinning down the thin balsa strips forming the wings...covering with tissue paper and applying coats of “dope.” My first ship model was the Cutty Sark in plastic. My sister‘s cat decided it was fun to play with and just about completely destroyed it. Something about cat satisfaction swiping rigging lines with claws. Then in the early 80s I got my first wood ship model kit...Model Shipways “Revenue Cutter.” Now I would have to say I prefer models from kits that I nearly always bash up some. I do have two scratch builds under the bench which are on again, off again projects. Both with hulls almost complete...the Roebuck and the Confederacy. I would say I prefer kits even if I bash them up by getting better wood, better fixtures, adding details, etc. I think I have a half dozen kits stacked up in the corner of the shipyard waiting for attention. Two of which are Bob Hunt’s last kits that he did when he switched from CDC milling to laser cutting the parts templates. Right now I am into the Victory Model kit Revenge 1577. And already trying to decide which kit I will pick up when the Revenge is complete! “So many kits...so little time!”

Glad to hear that here are so many "Old Timers" around. I started in the 1950s, 1954 or 1955, with model airplanes. Yes balsa wood, tissue paper and dope. Mine had engines and I flew then on the road in front of the house. Then came plastic model cars, at what point escapes me. The first model ship was a plastic model of the USS Constitution that I was building in 1974 when I was transferred to Korea and gave it to my brother. Next model ship was in 1978 when I was given a wooden one that was partially finished by a friend's husband who had passed away. I was in Spain at the time and saw these beautiful model ship kits on display in shops and got started to build from kits. The first kit was the "Scottish Mail." I still have these models on hand. Both of those survived trips from Spain to Alabama and then to South Carolina and three moves within South Carolina. And later I progressed to scratch building.
