Question: efore laser cutting

How were kits offered before the advent of laser cutting?
Long story short... are there still any kits without the pre-cut pieces?

I am building a 40 plus year old kit by Mamoli, the only cut parts are the bulkhead frame and false decks. Everything else you have to make yourself. The parts appear to be hand cut on a scroll saw or similar, and need significant sanding to bring them to shape. Some of the false decks had areas that were 5mm out of true.

there are the Harold Hahn timbering sets which is a semi-kit with a few laser cut parts and milled wood

Some kits were die cut.
Some kits had the parts printed on the wood and you had to cut them out yourself.
Interesting thought, would using one of these printed kits make you a scratch builder?

.....a scratch builder not yet, but a model maker certainly yes

My 70 year old Connie by Scientific Models has Parts I have to cut out by hand. It’s tricky when you go against the grain.

steel rule die cutting like a cookie cutter but much more pressure. The problem was the die rolled the edge and only soft wood like Balsa could be used.
