the ships i have made so far i have tied the ratlines in situ , mostly because i have completely assembled the masts and that's the only way to do it, but now i see there is a tool for tying the ratlines off of the ship , is this a good practice or should i stick with how i have been doing it?

I have seen a ratline tool, but reviews say it doesn't work well.

Most shrouds and ratlines have to be tied in place to ensure square and even lines and pressure on the masts.

One suggestion I have seen in two forms, a paper with grid drawn horizontal with scale spacing for ratlines, clip behind shrouds and tie knots till your done. Other version was a stick or piece of cardstock cut to scale height, and moved up each time you finish a row. Both are guides to keep lines level as you go.

On the one kit I have done ratlines, it was simple tie clove hitch, glue and repeat, and repeat and repeat....

i don't mind tying them its just that i saw this tool and have no idea if its any good , i will say that i have bought a couple of the model expo tools that i regret as they don't really work as advertised

Do you have a photo of the tool in question?

Also in the general topics forum are a question or two on rigging and ratlines, also on tools and you may find your answers in those forums.

i did find a couple of threads on ratlines and i think the majority would tie them on the ship as the tool looks too hard to work properly , good to know and now i wont waste my money
