I am building a second Connie after our former cat destroyed the first one. On SS, (kits available for sale are a mite expensive) so when one my friends heard what happened he gave me an unfinished opened kit he had for years that he was not interested in.
The masts are in. The sails that came with his kit were dry and brittle and cracked and not usable.
I would like to built her in port with furled sails. Does any one know where I can get rigging directions for furled sails, and what would make a good furled sail? I would imagine she only had her yards in port with no studding sail booms.

Check out: "The Art of Rigging," by George Biddlecombe, Dover Pub., 1990, and "Ship Modeling Simplified: Tips and Techniques for Model Construction from Kits," Frank Mastini . I think you will find these very helpful.

Also, "Historic Ship Models," Wolfram zu Monfeld, Sterling Pub. Co., Inc., 2005. There is whole chapter just on sails, types, various ways they were rigged, etc. You might be able to find each of these on Amazon or through interlibrary loan if you have a good library in your vicinity.

People have been using silkspan, a material used on RC model planes with success as sail material. I also saw some amazing work by Peter Voogt, who used tissue for sails for his Bluenose. The European tissue is more substantial than what we have here. In fact, I was in Europe and took home several boxes of it just in case! Another idea is the wrapping paper used to wrap around gift items such as clothing when you put it in a box. That too is thicker.
