Santa Maria1:48 (Pavel Nikitin)

Forgot to mention the cleats and chocks on the bowsprit. Be Careful, the last chock on each side, furthest from the tip are reversed. And also note... I didn't fill in the walls of the forecastle per the kit drawings. If you do this, again be careful. If you put the cleats on, you won't be able to get the bowsprit through the hole in the forecastle wall.

After I can't even find things it front of my face (rigging plans!!) I'm almose afraid to say there is a problem with fitting the bowsprit...

This is the hole in the forecastle deck for the bowsprit... Also notice the 6x6mm timber that's in the way...
1.jpg

I sized the bowsprit per the illustration on the plans. The bowsprit is larger than the hole in the deck it's supposed to fit into.
2.jpg

I ground out the hole larger. And had to remove part of one of the 6x6mm timbers under the deck.I
3.jpg

I also had to taper the end of the bowsprit to fit it correctly.
4.jpg

then to cover up all my cutting, I put a flat black painted cover up base around the area I sanded/cut out.

On to the next step in my Santa Maria kit building adventure...
Good morning. I know the experts in this field will cringe in dismay ROTF with the tapering of the bow sprit, however I do the same- if I don’t see it why spend hours doing it;). Your end result is fabulous. Cheers Grant

What do you think?

If I were to put sails on this ship... Is it best to attach the sail to the yard before attaching to the mast and then the ship? Or would the sail be in the way too much during adding the standing rigging?

Or put the masts on, then the standing rigging, the add the yards with sails attached to the yards? 1.jpg

Hi. What Paul said. If the sails get in the way for any particular job you can always clip them up and out of the way. Small sewing clips (search Amazon) are handy for a range of jobs and are pretty strong.
I can confirm that alcohol helps.

I prepared the masts and yards. I sanded grooves and put small nails in the yards to hold them in place now as easier than doing this after the masts are mounted. I still need to put some eyebolts'blocks on the crowsnest and a few other places before setting the masts in place. So far the only blocks that there weren't enough in the kit was block #8. But I had some 5mm blocks on hand. So everything worked out there.

edit: I didn't attach the yards to the mast. they are jus set in place for the pic. Will attach the mast and standing rigging before putting the yards on.

Guess I should put foot ropes on the spritsail yard. Looks like I missed that one. I read that the bowsprit also has foot ropes, but don't recall seeing this on any models??

Thankyou for this pic of your mast rigging.... just wondering the best way to start my rigging for the Wasa. Layout on the original srawing bofore mounting masts. Will try this... JM

I tied all the rigging blocks to the masts. Think I'm ready to mount the mast and start the standing rigging. Some of the blocks in the kit haven't been used yet. They are likely to be used when attaching the sails. I had to use about 15 of my own #8 blocks (5mm single sheave) blocks are there weren't enough in the kit.

Always such nice work.

I put the shrouds and backstay on the main mast.

I tied the deadeyes different from the kit images...

This is mine...

And this is Pavels build...

And another build...

And now... My next major OOPS!! The backstays are hitting the crowsnest! So... I didn't position the crowsnest correctly. It's too high on the mast. I must have had the ruler upside down!! ROTF If I put sails on the ship I'll have to furl the upper sail on the main mast.
