After I had checked if all parts were included in the kit, I construction some of the hull up to the first battery deck, just to see how it looked. As I was organizing these comments while looking at the actual model, I realized that I had made a terrible mistake with the battery deck of six guns. It will take some creativity and gently sawing to correct. More on that later in this post, for now the first photo is basically how the model looked several years ago and its current build condition. Later on in this post I will show a newly taken photo of the Port side to show that it hasn't changed since 2005.
This photo shows the starboard side midship area and the built-up starboard bow of the model as it currently is.
The next two photos show the Port and Starboard gundeck with the gun carriages installed, (three on each side), in the correct position to allow the nice guns to protrude from the hull for about 18 or 19mm. This is the Port side, showing the metal gunport frames.
The Starboard side which shows the same gunport frames and gun carriages already fastened to the deck. Now HERE is where my mistake was made, I glued the upper gundeck part #39, to the bulkheads BEFORE I set the guns on their gun carriages.
This left absolutely no easy access to install the six very nicely detailed metal guns included in the kit unto the finished gun carriages. I am thinking that I will have to gently saw six small rectangle openings through the installed deck #39 in six places just above each of the six guns in order to seat the cannon properly onto the carriages.
I also may have some long tools that could reach all the way back to the two most aft gun carriages. Then use the same pliers or forceps to install the remaining four guns. Newbie mistake I HOPE it won’t happen again. The Euromodel Royal William kit has three battery decks that will INCLUDE guns and carriages on all of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Batteries. You have to place those over 120 guns somewhere, don’t you?
But that is a very long way to that stern most gun carriage.
An edited photo which show how I plan to install the guns unto the gun carriages using these six openings, three on each side. Once the guns are placed, I will fasten the cut piece back into its relative opening and deck plank over the entire deck to hide the correction.
Looking at the gunports on the Port side of battery deck, it clearly shows the carriages installed. The first layer of rough planking will be sanded down and covered by darker wood strips of approximately 1 or 1.5mm, which will make for a more cleaner planked hull. I will check what type will be used once I start this build again.
This photo is showing built up stern section from the Port side of the model, the middle two decks are only dry fitted and will slide out easily. I measured thrice and fitted only once.
A view of the main deck facing stern with the beach or some other light-colored wood for the staggered decking that I will add to all decks. This will also help hide my access openings cut into deck #39.
