Ever think of some of the shipping terms/ saying through the years that are still with us today, can you think of any?

hot shot
son of a gun
3 squares
Mind your P’s & Q’s
loose cannon
ship shape
run a tight ship
even keel
3 sheets to the wind. ( maybe not shipping term)
open Pandora’s box

How about "learning the ropes"? Seems appropriate enough for a modeling group, at least in my experience as a beginner. :)

@Sea Burd, I know the Greek mythology of Pandora's Box, but can I ask how that relates to ships/shipping?

Yep that’s one for sure.
on the ship, HMS Pandora, the “box” was a prison on the deck, nasty conditions, you never knew what you would see when you opened up the box, (jail).

I was watching a show the other night, they showed that French Had a new weapon, heating cannon balls red hot ( hot shot) and it burnt ships down. When they went through a sail, is caused a fire immediately.
so where did the cat out of the bag come from?
