where does the Sir Edward Hawke build fall as a kit, semi-scratch or scratch project?
a kit would make it a very poor kit because there are no fittings or rigging or finished parts so it cannot be called a "kit"
scratch project then all you get is the original drawing or scratch built from plans would include the redone modeling plans
semi-kit is where the project falls and using Harold Hahns definition a "timbering set" lets define exactly what that is, first off, it is a project anyone who does not have the tools to mill all the wood can still build the model. Dimensioned wood is provided NOT finished material over size material that has to be worked down to a finish. This gives a builder experience working with wood. Laser cut frame "blanks" the frames once built are oversize, so when the hull is built the builder has to shape the hull once again giving an experience of how a hull is shaped. So far, the timbering set focuses on the build and eliminating all the mill work. A builder wanting a challenge of a plank on frame model the timbering set provides the built of scratch building and not the scratch of milling lumber and drawing working plans. Plank on frame kits are far and few between and costly there are no starter POF kits to give a builder a chance to try it until now! a semi POF timbering set for $275.00 including 8 cannons and 10 swivel guns because anyone starting with semi scratch most likely does not have a lathe.
