I am very new to this exciting new world and I was wondering what kind of research is usually done before you start your build. I am going to build the Occre Santa Maria as my first ship and I am not sure what to research about building this ship.

Welcome aboard! Like so many things, it depends. Some folks enjoy the research more than the building. Others the reverse. Proceed as it pleases you. In the case of the Santa Maria, there is a lot of conjecture and not a lot of hard data. The best book I've seen in that regard is The Ships of Christopher Columbus by Franco Gay and Cesare Ciano. Originally published in Italian but available as an English translation. Keep us informed of your progress. Fair winds!
