I have my model in hand and the supplies are on thier way. This kit is older than I am, but not by much. The instructions are good except there is nothing on how to paint. There is a blurb that states I will need Flat Tan, Flat White, Flat Biege, and Wood Brown (whatever that means). I also plan on using Flat Red, Yellow and Black for the decorations. As well as an Off White for the sails and maybe Red Leather for the hull of the ship, Im not sure.

First thing I noticed were these nicely engraved details along the side. This was a suprise since they didn't bother painting this detail on the box art model.

Can't wait to get started. In the meantime, I've been reading the instructions and familiarizing myself with everything.

Dear Evan! I'm looking at the box, at the parts, and I'm laughing! This is the most classic version of a model of Francis Drake's English galleon, the Golden Hind.

So, the "unnamed Spanish galleon" is just a marketing ploy. There are no parts of the Golden Hind in the kit that have been corrected, and nothing at all has been done to turn old Golden Hind into a Spaniard! The Spanish galleons were quite different from the English hound galleons, so I would recommend you forget about the box lettering and the sail designs and make the kit a 100% Golden Hind.

You're also unsure about the paint choice. Here's a standard paint scheme for the Golden Hind:

Oh wow, you're right. That makes me a little sad. When I looked at the hull I thought a Spanish Galleon would have a bigger belly, but what do I know?
Still, I will stick with a Spanish Galleon. Her figure head is an eagle and the stern board is the Virgin Mary. I can see why they didnt paint the hull decortations now... The pictures will useful, thanks!

Yep I knew I recognised the side design and the foc'sle design.

I have this one in my stash awaiting attention.

I wanted to see how everything fit together before painting. I had to shave off a lot, and the aft section is a mess. I have one bent piece as well, luckily much of it will be hidden from view.

I had to whittle down a few of the pieces in the back a concerning amount. Even then, it barely came together. I will probably go back and shave some more at some point.

Finally, I made a coloring plan. I went on the premise that a few lucky sailors were given some red, black and yellow paint and told to use it up!

Evan, if you decide to make a galleon belonging to Spain (alas, this is a mistake!), then keep in mind that these galleons were painted completely differently.
I also recommend redesigning the nose to at least minimally get rid of the English design elements. But it would be better if you made the Golden Hind.

Fit seems a bit grim in places, but nothing to a skilled craftsman like yourself though.. Thumbsup

That decoration is more typical of an Elizabethan galleon.
Spanish galleons were more austere in their decoration.

I see what yall mean.
I think I will sand down some of these molded designs and go with a more authentic look. Thank you, gentlemen!

I started gluing this weekend. I tried to glue as much as I could and still be able to paint all the nooks properly.
I also tried putty for the first time. Im still experimenting with when I should use it. I also sanded down the seam like on the bottom of the hull, which seemed like an easy win.

It had rained most of the week and into the weekend and it's always humid here in Southeast Texas, so I was afraid it would be several weeks before I got a chance to primer anything. Then a dryer north wind blew in today which brought us down to 60 percent humidity. So I got to spraying!20260524_173550.jpg20260524_173653.jpg

I debated glueing the cannon down first before using primer, but was worried it would be hard to paint the deck around them. I guess I will have to sand down a small spot after everything is painted to use the cement? Or maybe super glue them after painting... Im not sure. Anyways, the Cannon are primed and ready for paint.

Next weekend is busy, but hopefully I can fit a little painting in.

I slowly added layers of paint throughout the week.
Unfortunately, I didn't have much direction for what paints to use.
I used 3 parts Mahogony brown, 1 part biege for the hull
Off white for the bottom of the hull
Biege for the deck and Biege Brown for the mast and various deck pieces.
Im not happy with the Biege Brown...
Ordered some Dark Sand Tan.
