Here's my way of supporting shrouds whilst tying ratlines. I have made up clamps from strip wood & M2 nuts & screws. These keep the shrouds from being pulled out of alignment.

I found with this method, that I had a tendency to knock the clamps off with my hands.

Your right, sometimes they are in the way. Otherwise they are easy to adjust. But it is the same way to do. I draw the ratlines on the paper. That makes the work a little more precise. That's why I showed my picture.Touché!
