My humble introduction to some very fine craftsmen or persons.
I am planning on restoring a model ship built by my great grandfather, that would be Ed. Family legend is that he sailed as a cabin-boy at the age of eight. We believe he retired from the sea some 10 or 12 years later to marry and make sure that I would be born someday. I am grateful for his thoughtfulness so I wish to do a nice a job of restoration. The ship is humble. More folk art than builder/craftsman. It served as a boy's toy for 3 generations so it needs lots of work.
I have much to learn but I’ve been told that I am educable.

Welcome from Down Under and wish you luck on the restoration.

I suggest you take lots of photos prior to starting the restoration and start a build log and post picture so fellow model ship builder can help you with your journey.

Cheers
Geoff

Thank you Geoff,

I will take your advice re. the photos.

Ed built at least three of these models. One is in a local historical society and I have photos of that one https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Edward_D._Whitten%27s_Model_Ships. It was re-rigged at some time by a museum volunteer.

Hi Ted,
I am glad that you joined our family. I read some of that article. Very interesting. I have to admit that a little envy sets in as I do not have anyone in my family tree at least stopping at the grandfather level that was into ships either model or real. Nor do I have any children to pass this on to.

Thank you Donnie,

I was unsure if my restoration goal was in keeping with your forum's target subject matter.

Just knowing that my project has some interest here will push me to up my game.

Re. " Nor do I have any children to pass this on to."
The work you are doing here on shipsofscale is passing "this" on to more mother's children than you could imagine.

I never thought of it that way !! Thank you. That means a lot.

Yes of course, the restoration is a great project to do here.
