The "Like" button

Just some idle thinking from a non social media type . What is the general feeling about what the "Like" button means? Is it just the obvious "that's cool" or is there more to it? Is it there to replace all the "thank you's" and keep the forum more compact? As there is no way to respond to a "Like" is it polite/necessary to thank everyone for all the "like's". Just some semi serious wondering from a social troglodyte

I think by using the 'like' button it helps to keep members motivated.
Knowing that other members are looking at what you are doing, and like your efforts helps you to also try and improve your work and gives that little boost that we all sometimes need.

Well that is my thought.
