Hi All,

Can anyone tell me the physical purpose of these rigging lines connected to the fighting tops? I see them all of the time but cannot figure out their purpose.

Very interesting. Working on HMS Surprise I'm rigging the crowsfeet for the first time. It looks real cool and not so hard to rig as I thought it would be.

It is to keep the foot of the sail from wearing on the stay and/or the top. Not good for the sail or the stay.

Just found this post when I was researching crowsfeet trying to decide whether to include them on the Discovery1789. They were apparently discontinued at the end of the 18th century. I'm wondering if something else was done to stop the sails from tucking up under the top. Seems strange that all of a sudden sails don't blow under the top anymore, laws of physiscs and all :)
