The ships Longboat 1/48

Thanks! Glad to be back to work.

Made some progress yesterday, glued all the frames together, faired and shaped them, and then glued them into place.

They came out much better than my original frames. A couple shots of them dry fitted.

Everything seemed to line up correctly on the dry fit. Some of the frames look out of alignment somewhat but I found that was just because they weren't fixed in place with glue. Onced glued in they all more or less fit like they were supposed to.

The one mistake I made came during dry fitting. I couldn't get the 10th forward frame to sit right on the keel, I though I needed to sand it down to make it smaller. It is pretty small on the plans.

So in accordance with the plans I sanded it down. But now that everything is fixed it place its too short. We'll see what the fixes is but I don't think I want to remake the frame, that's a lot of work for one frame, especially since I'm out of that thickness board.

But we'll see. I'm considering remaking the keel so who knows.

@Gventura - I am happy to see, that you are back working on your model
I am looking forward how you will solve the problem with the last frame

Sorry for be shortly off topic, but I have to ask Johann alias @archjofo a short question:
Do I interpret this photo correctly and you did not cut our the individual frames, bat bended them over an iron?
Which kind of iron is this?

Hi,
I like what you show here very much.
A good basis for an excellent model.
I also built a 1:48 scale longboat for my French corvette some time ago. You can see a video of the construction of this longboat if you are interested:

Oh I will need to watch this, thanks for sharing!

After a little bit of shaping and an over night drying we have something.

The tops of the ribs look all a little uneven but that should be fixable with some sanding and the stability of planking.

Hello Gventura, here is the link to Johann's construction from the German forum. From page 91 or 92 Johann @archjofo starts building the boats, I think Seher is interesting, maybe it helps a little.

Need a couple pieces to finish the stern.

20230315_211932.jpg

Thought I'd try carving them down with a hand planer instead of using a machine.

20230315_235543.jpg

We'll see how it turns out.

Something else I'm noticing is the the final rib in the right may be shaped wrong, it doesn't flow with the rest

20230315_211946.jpg
Might just need to make a new one of those

It is not only the rib....
- but maybe the rib is only bended, because your horizontal board is too long?

So while I was waiting to source the wood for my other build thought I would work on a smaller project. I don't think it's going right.

I broke a piece already.

But the reason why I'm thinking this is wrong is because I'm pretty sure I built my jig incorrectly.

For some reason I ended up with the profile as it should be after the ribs are installed, instead of before. So I'm going to have to rebuild this.

Here is where I went wrong. I used the same sized blanks for every section, but I cut the templates at the wrong location I think.

So the jig is technically correct yet still wrong lolView attachment 302641

Thank you!

I've been working on the Egyptienne but have been having serious issues with the building jig. When I print/scan the plans they aren't printing correctly. When you compare my printer plans to the originals the printed plans are nearly identical except the bow is longer. I've been unable to fix this issue so I haven't been able to move forward.

I had decided to cut out a new top piece of the jig with a better set of plans that also included the spacing between ribs but found my original board and the newly printed plans were both incorrect in size. So until I can fix this issue it's been on pause.

This longboat is also getting a new stern post I just haven't finished it yet. I started cutting side planks so those are ready once I finish the carvings on the post.

Happy Birthday, Gventura
