Hello All,
Having returned to plastic scale modeling after a 20 year hiatus, I find that everything is smaller than I remember! Currently I’m diving into a stash of 1/350 Ship of the WW2 era and I’m finding the aircraft (canopies in particular) a huge bugaboo. Someone must have figured out how to make them look right with straight lines for Window frames that match the color of the ship! I have a few ideas, but would welcome any input or ideas beyond decals/PE/30-0 brushes. attached is a photo of a test subject.

thank you

TT

Do not try to paint! Use decals cut into strips to do the framing. Either look through your stash (?) for spare decals of the proper color or spray some clear decal film with the right color (usually fuselage color) and cut them into strips and apply like a regular decal.

1/350, too much for me.

Hello TT,

At 1:350 the airplane is very small. I would use a scribe to make the frame and use a needle to paint the frame. May I take a guess at what you are building. From the look of the fuselage, it appears to be a B-25. Could you be building the carrier Hornet. The B-25 would be part of the Doolittle Raiders. Am I anywhere close or out in left field. Are you going to start a build thread?

Bill

Ding Ding you won the Cigar Bill! Yes, Doolittle raid Hornet is on deck. Along with Belleau Wood, Sangamon and Akagi. Then onto the Battleships…

Will the decal set/Sol craze the clear? Or set them over a Future base I’m guessing? I’ll give that a try. I also just picked up .003 sepia and black artist pens for a trial.

No, decal set (or sol) will not craze the clear. If you brush Future on the canopy and then put on the decal while the Future is still wet the Future will pull down the decal as it dries and you won't have to use any decal set solution. I've been using this technique for 30+ years. Trust me, it works. Practice on a vacuum-formed packaging for something if you wish.

Thank you, will be giving that a shot tonight with green drab decal strips

Try very fine tip paint pens. They come as acrylic or oil based paint (they are NOT marker pens!). They have various tip widths with one being a micro tip. Look for technical drafting paint pens rather than hobby pens. Having made this suggest I am not convinced they will be fine enough for your project. That is way too small for me! :) I would be pleased to see what you come up with and the results! Keep posting! Tiny damn aircraft indeed…

I have used painters tape and a steady hand to produce window masks and then airbrushed. The issue you have is doing this 17 times to finish all the B-25s. Jim Daniels’ pen idea along with a straight edge (tape) is a good idea. Luckily the paint scheme is olive drab. You should be able to find a pen that matches.
