uk model boat show

Hi Dave

I doubt I will be going. It is highly likely 99.5% of the ships on display will be modern RC ones. Not enough to tempt me for the 2.5 hour drive each way. Many of the UK shows have been in decline in recent years. The UK really lacks any representation of Period ship modellers,we are sadly in the minority.

Kind Regards

Nigel

Nigel, I'm in Portsmouth. In my local shop I was asking if there were any other similar builders. It seems the majority is railway or RC. There is another they tell me, so I left my contact details. Portsmouth!!?? On the old Navy Day's there was always a vast collection (20 years or so ago) of superb builds. Would there be any gain in forming a UK builders guild sort of arrangement. Regular communication, exhibitions?

Hi Bob

I gave forming a UK group/guild some thought a while ago. There currently is NOTHING in the UK that specialises in Period models.Numerous RC boat Clubs, loads of clubs and competitions for the plastic modeller.I even thought about joining the Surface Warship Association but the realisation that I would probably be in the minority of one made me realise I would benefit little from this.Quite sad really considering England was probably at the forefront of Naval models in the late 17th Century.
Whether forming a group would be of any benefit I suppose would be dependant on the members of such a group.Would the members be prepared to have some form of get together every so often?Would they bring any of their models and if they did, would they prepared to contribute to the hiring of a venue? The builders I have conversed with range from the Scottish highlands,Ireland,Cornwall and East Anglia so we are spread far and wide.
These are all things I thought about at the time.I really just don't know if there is enough interest. So much so,I am considering going to G.Delacroix's show in France next year.

Kind Regards

I have a Facebook group called Merchant Ships in Miniature, with over 2,000 members, and it is very active, despite the fact that you hardly ever see merchant ship models on forums. So I am quite sure there will be a lot of modellers out there who would join a period ship model group.
Here is a link https://www.facebook.com/groups/1841532386133008/ As it is a public group, you do not need to be a member to view it.

Bob I don't doubt it.I am a member of numerous groups on Facebook but I am refering to something more physical rather than internet based. There is a large following of merchant ships when you move to RC modelling.I am a member of a UK RC ship forum with plenty of merchant ships, admittedly quite a bit larger than your great models.Merchant ships and Offshore vessels outnumber warships in this category surprisingly.

For many years, I have been a member of the North West Model Shipwrights Society that meets every month in Grimsargh Lancashire. In recent years, models are few and far between, although one member is building Sovereign of the Seas. But we have now got to know each other so well that we just enjoy the day-long meeting where we talk of all sorts of maritime subjects. I took this 12 years ago, when members
were more active.

The distance is the stumbling block as you say, South coast to midlands in our traffic! Peter Goodwin knows a few I think within reach of Hampshire/London. Thinking in terms of a more localised group. Meantime I have to arrange to see some particular models at Chatham, that should be satisfying. Best wishes, Bob
