I was recently cleaning out my great uncles cabin and found two unfinished ship models, I looked around some more and found that he had all of the Ships in Scale magazines from 1990-1993, so I looked it up and found this site. I’m a amateur model builder but have never done a scale ship before and I’m excited to work on one. But I didn’t know where to even start when finding what model the ships were, if you can identify them that would be a huge help, thanks!

I see the stones for a little bit of scale to the size of the boats but not sure how large they are. Looks like the first has no rudder and the second has rudder and gun ports, perhaps. Number one has no mast holes therefore I assume it is a launch craft of some sort.

Maybe a Baltimore Clipper, or similar. Hard to tell without scale of the model and the size and other info (number of masts and form of the rigging). Do you have more parts with them or the plans? Without those, it will be hard to complete these. Especially with your limited experience with wood ship models. I'm not saying you couldn't do it, but you would most likely have a lot of challenges and frustration. :)

thanks- I’m planning to search the cabin a bit more for the box, there’s a couple of covered up closets that I haven’t checked, fingers crossed

i am going with the Harvey because the Dapper Tom is a solid hull kit the Pride of Baltimore has only 2 guns per side
now as for the Harvey i have seen models with 5 guns per side and 4 guns per side some kits have a gun port at the bow and some do not.
we have several builds of the Harvey here so type in Harvey in the search

Could be an early Revenue Cutter. Roger B Taney or Joe Lane. Both were produced by Marine Models. But they were solid hulls. I've built both.

The hull forms look to be the same size. The one to the right hasn't had it's bulwarks or stem and keel pieces applied yet. Are the spots on the right hand one pegs (trunnels) or just schmutz? What did uncle have to do with these; was he a builder or group leader or club member? Why 2 models of the same boat? The mystery to me seems broader than just the identities, however if that can't be discovered by a blogger here or old catalogs and such, I'd get a copy or go to the library looking for H. I. Chapelle's American Sailing Navy. The sugestions above are very likely, I doubt if they represent armed merchants, their run is long and fine.

Harvey is one of the few with 4 gunports per side, it also fits the hull pattern and rudder. Do you know if they're kit or scratch?. It looks like the old AL version, the aft gunport is further back in the new one. Measure the length of deck and the length of the real ship to work out the scale, that will give a clue to the maker if it's a kit. AL's old kit is 1:50. New one is 1:60.
