USS Essex (1799)

Model Shipways kit, 1/8 in. to the foot. I think that's 1:96 scale. I commissioned the case from a local woodworker. I paid $600 for it back in 1977 or so. Honduras mahogany with French polish.

It was a gift to my father. On his death, it went to auction from his estate (I had no room for the model). It sold for $1200 in 2002 and was bought by a wealthy Charlotte, North Carolina, chap, which I was very happy with. Was placed in a nice big home. I hope it's still there.

Thank you for the compliment. It was my first model. I was about 24 y.o.
 
The craftsman got very sick making the case, breathing in the resin from the mahogany. He recovered but it took a while. Proper mask necessary!
