This post shall serve as an introduction and a future build log. If someone finds it truly offensive by combining a brief introduction and build log...sue me (not really, you can just tell me )

- Who I am -

I am DWL (by night known as Wolf). I'm a wage-slave with no money, and with a love of wooden warships.

- Why I'm doing this -

Recent years I've gained a renewed interest in the ships and the hobby of building them, especially the VOC Retourschip type vessels, which occupied a niche and interesting role in history. Thanks to said renewed interest in these ships, I've decided on a little-known VOC ship that I want to kick-off my scratch-building endeavour and improve my skills. What better way to hone my skills and indulge myself in a hobby than building an infinitely more complex and intricate model than the (only) kit I've (ever) built?

- Outline of the build -

I'm planning on building the most average retourschip you can imagine mainly using the VOC Prins Willem and VOC Amsterdam as reference to draw, then build a VOC ship known as "Verbergh" or "Verberg". I've also recently found that the ship's name was likely a mix-up when written down in the ship registers and could've possibly been callled "De Brug".

Other than my...uh...attempt attached below, which was built around 7 or so years ago, I've never delved further into ship building, so I'm excited to learn.

First update

Due to my unending wisdom and carefulness, this is going to take at least a month longer to design and build, as I broke my dominant hand 2 days ago.

I have started planning and researching how exactly an average VOC retourschip would've looked like and have found that it's usually around 40m to 45m or so in length, 9m to 12m in width about 850 average tonnage (no idea how correct this info is, but it's what I can find).

I will be taking the basic hull shape of a few average VOC retourschips and draw my own plan. This wil largely be based off of the VOC Prins Willem, VOC Amsterdam an VOC Batavia.

I'll post more updates once my hand has healed and I am able to start with the rough-drafts.

(This took me 35 minutes to type and that's near enough for only one hand for me to effectively become a luddite and never type again )

See everyone in a month's time.

Hope your hand heals quickly. I imagine it's really slowing everything down in your life right now. Scratch building a VOC ship is a complex project, measured in years and months, like many projects members here work on. Your previous model looks great!

Hallo Wolf,

Sounds like an interesting project! I'll be putting up a chair to watch it.

Hopefully your hand heals quickly. Beterschap!
In the mean time you'll have enough time to brainstorm about the model ;)

Wolf,

Hope your hand heals good and quickly. For inspiration, you can take a look at this site:

Good day to all of the forum denizens, beware, for I have returned!

My hand is at a point where I am able to hold a pencil again, so I shall start the rough draft of the shape of the ship before I start ironing out all of the creases.
I'll give progress updates as I go.

Stay tuned for the next episode of "When will this guy update his forum!?"
