What does 1/4 or 3/16 scale relate to for models?

What is the scale I would need for Cannon carriage for a 1:50 model

1/4 scale = 1:48 - 1" = 4 scale feet
3/16 scale = 1:64 - 1" = 5.33 scale feet
You can probably use 1:48 scale cannon and accessories for a 1:50 scale model... Try it and see how it looks to yourself.
